I. Exposition
The Hunting and Fishing Museum which is the only museum of such type in the country will soon celebrate the 20th anniversary of its productive activity. It was founded and is supported by the Rosokhotrybolovsoyuz Alliance.
For all these years, our museum has been hosting its visitors and fascinating them with its wonderful exhibits. Each Museum exhibit may turn into a fabulous story or an unexpected discovery.
The main part of the museum exposition consists of taxidermical exhibits – stuffed animals and biological groups made by widely known artistic taxidermists: N.K. Nazmov, V.N. Trofimov, V. Korotkov and V. Khrenov. Section “Species Diversity” may be of special interest for the visitors: a fox hunting a mouse, a raccoon dog, a bobcat and other animals and birds are slowly rotating in front of the watchers.
Our exposition will help you learn more about the history of hunting and fishing in Russia, the history of hunters and fishermen, and the role of biotechnical activities in game husbandry, traditional and up-to-date methods of sport hunting, hunting dogs, amateur and sport fishing (angling).
Of special interest is the fascinating display stand of hunting guns, demonstrating various models of rifles made in Russia before the October revolution of 1917: a rifle produced at the Evdokimov’s factory in Izhevsk, in the first half of XIX century, caliber 28; the gun produced at the Emperor’s Tula Armory, the Izhevsk-produced ‘duck’ rifle, made in the first half of XX century, caliber 8, and modern rifles. There is also a display of hunting equipment used by the hunters in XIX and in early XX century.
Section “International Cooperation” will tell you about Rosokhotrybolovsoyuz’s business relations with the public associations of hunting and fishing from other countries, sport achievements in the international competitions in fishing, shooting and hunting sports, and hunting trophies exhibitions for the whole 50-year history of the organization.
You will learn the difference between the horns of Far East red deer from those of Siberian stag, the horns of Siberian roe deer from saiga antelope and find out what “hunting trophy” is like in the “trophy corner” of the museum.
The artistic model of game husbandry (by E. Solokhina) contains various types of hunting reserves and hunting animals species of the Moderate Climate Area in Russia.
You will learn about a baiting procedure for earth dogs in section “Dogs Preparation for Hunting”.
The artistic stained-glass windows “Hunting of North Country’s Peoples” (by B. Voronov) and the graphic pieces by the famous animal painter V. Gorbatov are in admirable proportion with the museum exposition.
II. Methods of Work
As a member of the Union of Museums in Russia, the Hunting and Fishing Museum carries out significant educational work with young people, which implies inspiring the love of nature, the sense of beauty, protection of the animal world and, finally, the feeling of patriotism for their Motherland.
Methods of work used by the museum are quite various: traditional excursions for high school and college students with video films in fishing and hunting, weekly classes of the junior hunting section supported by the Moscow City Association of Hunting and Fishing, and classes in hunting trophy examination for students and specialists. In July 2000, our museum became the venue for training courses for international hunting trophy experts.
III. Exhibitions
In addition to the permanent exposition, smaller exhibitions (of badges, cards, photographs, stamps) dedicated to nature, hunting and fishing activities, are always available for the visitors. Our museum organizes children’s drawings contests and animal painters’ exhibitions.
The museum takes active part in Russia’s hunting life. It arranges numerous exhibitions, such as “Russian Hunting” held by the Russian Fund of Culture and the Russian Hunting Club, “Hunting and Fishing in Old-Days Russia” and “Hunter and Fisherman’s Day”. We exhibited 62 trophies at the Ist International Exhibition “Nature, Hunting and Hunting Trophies” (2002), out of which 44 were recognized as “golden” trophies. Our museum’s trophies are sometimes exhibited in Czech traditional exhibitions “Wild Nature”.
III. Board of Trustees
In 2003, a Board of Trustees (A.P. Kaledin – Chairman) was founded at the museum. It helped to implement many projects.
